After stumbeling upon these macro photos of the human eye, I got a little inspired and started fiddling with my 550D. In addition to being fun this was partially a test for an upcoming project.
In any case, it turned into this:
This was done with the 550D and the kit lens, attached front-to-front to a 50mm f1.4 Nikkor using that ultimate tool called duct tape.
The monitor allowed me to watch the recording of my eye as I was watching the recording. Of my eye. Being recorded. Etc.
What I used:
- Canon 550D
- Kit lens
- 50mm f1.4 Nikkor
- Duct tape
- Homemade 720p monitor
- Laptop battery
- A random halogen lamp
- Colorista II (After Effects)
- Optical Flares (After Effects)
- NeatVideo (VirtualDub)

hi there. I am currently a Sculpture student studying in Limerick School of Art & Design in Ireland and I’m doing my studio practice on the Human eye. I’v done a lot of macro photography and I have just been assigned a video brief – ‘a sense of place.’ I want to achieve reflections in the eye but also keep the quality of macro. I was wondering if you could give me any advice or tips on how to achieve this. By the way the video is amazing
one other way for a great macro that I use is to remove the front element of a 28-80mm lens (very cheap .. like 80$)
great result you should try it
Bye
[...] Hypnotic and trippy macro photography project geared squarely at the human eye. Shot on the Canon 550D DSLR camera with a very simple lighting setup (more info here). [...]
Hi man, I just wanted to thank you for posting the details on how you achieved this! I thought your video as “guy with a sick lens” but you got creative with what you had. and thats awesome
kudos
